How to Draw an Easy Caterpillar

Let's start by gathering your materials to draw the caterpillar.

Drawing Supplies

Digital Drawing Supplies

iPad

Apple pencil

Procreate

Paper Drawing Supplies

Drawing pencil

Drawing Paper

Art markers or Colored Pencils

Light Table for Tracing (optional)

I like to use graphic software programs like Inkscape, Affinity Designer, or Procreate to make my easy cartoon drawings. Inkscape is an open-source graphic software.  Which means it's free to use. Sometimes, I use an online Inkscape drawing app if I'm not at my home computer.

I'll use Procreate for this drawing. The brushes that I use are

  • Procreate brush
  • Round brush
  • Marker brush

You can use any brushes that you like.

Draw a Caterpillar Step by Step

For the first step, we're going to make a small circle for the head.

Quick Tip: To get a perfect circle, draw a circle, and hold the pencil tip down for a few seconds. The circle will automatically set to a perfect shape.

Draw a semi-circle that starts from the top right side of the caterpillar head and ends at the bottom right side of the head. Repeat this step six more times.

You can vary the size and shape of the semicircles to make the body look more organic. Just make the last semicircle slightly smaller than the others.

Now that I've drawn the body, I'll add some feet to this little guy.

Draw Caterpillar Feet

To make the feet, I'll draw a small pair of v shapes under each semicircle. I thought about making little boot style feet, but I prefer the look of the v shape.

They still have a cartoon feel but also look like real caterpillar feet.

How to Draw a Caterpillar Face

Draw a cute little caterpillar face using a few simple strokes.

I'll draw circles for the eyes, and put a curved line in each circle.

Then I'll draw another curved line below to give him a smile.

The next step is to give him antennae. I'll draw two lines going from the top of his head and end each line with an open circle.

The caterpillar drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.

Coloring the Caterpillar Drawing

You're ready to color your drawing of a caterpillar.

To do this, use the fill bucket tool (fill bounded areas tool). Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps).

If you have gaps, use my tip above to create perfect closed shapes.

I created a separate layer under my outline for the coloring step.

Choose a brush, I used the round brush and the marker brush. Then, color in each section.
